Life can bring moments of sadness, anxiety, hardship and distress. The Prophetic Sunnah teaches Muslims several powerful supplications to turn to Allah during difficult times, seeking relief, tranquility and ease.

Among the well-known supplications are the Dua for removing worry and sadness, the Dua of distress, the supplication of Prophet Yunus, and the prayer seeking protection from worry and grief.

Dua for Removing Worry and Sadness

One of the profound supplications attributed to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ asks Allah to make the Quran a source of light, comfort and relief:

“O Allah, I am Your servant, the son of Your servant and the son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command concerning me is ever executed, and Your decree concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that belongs to You, by which You have named Yourself, revealed in Your Book, taught to any of Your creation, or kept with You in the knowledge of the unseen, to make the Quran the spring of my heart, the light of my chest, the removal of my sadness and the departure of my worries.”

The supplication expresses complete dependence upon Allah and asks Him to replace distress and sadness with tranquility and inner peace.

Dua for Protection from Worry and Sadness

Another comprehensive Prophetic supplication is:

“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and sadness, from incapacity and laziness, from cowardice and miserliness, from the burden of debt and from being overcome by others.”

This prayer seeks Allah’s protection from several causes of emotional, physical and financial hardship.

The Dua of Distress

During times of severe hardship, the Prophet ﷺ would say:

“There is no god but Allah, the Most Great, the Most Forbearing. There is no god but Allah, Lord of the Mighty Throne. There is no god but Allah, Lord of the heavens, Lord of the earth and Lord of the Noble Throne.”

The supplication emphasizes Allah’s oneness, greatness and complete authority, while expressing the believer’s reliance upon Him during distress.

The Dua of Prophet Yunus for Relief

One of the most famous supplications associated with relief from distress is the prayer of Prophet Yunus (Jonah), peace be upon him, when he was in the belly of the whale:

“There is no god but You; glory be to You. Indeed, I was among the wrongdoers.”

Allah says after mentioning the supplication of Yunus:

“So We responded to him and saved him from the distress. And thus do We save the believers.” — Quran 21:88

This short but profound supplication combines belief in Allah’s oneness, glorification of Him and acknowledgment of human weakness and wrongdoing.

How Should a Muslim Deal with Worry and Sadness?

Dealing with distress is not limited to supplication alone. A Muslim combines dua, reliance upon Allah and taking lawful practical steps to address the circumstances causing the hardship.

Helpful practices include:

  • Increasing istighfar, or seeking Allah’s forgiveness.
  • Maintaining the obligatory prayers.
  • Making dua during blessed times.
  • Increasing remembrance of Allah.
  • Sending blessings upon Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
  • Trusting Allah while taking lawful practical measures.
  • Remaining patient and hopeful in Allah’s relief.

Dua is more than words repeated by the tongue. It is a doorway through which the believer turns to Allah, finding hope, tranquility and strength amid life’s difficulties.

What is a powerful Dua for relief from worry and sadness?

Among the well-known supplications is: “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and sadness...” The Dua of Prophet Yunus is also a profound supplication during hardship.
