حكم تحديد مدة الخطوبة في الإسلام وتوضيح الإفتاء

Engagement is considered an important preparatory stage in building married life. During this period, both parties get to know each other and evaluate the relationship in order to reach a well-informed decision about marriage or separation before the contract is concluded.

The Fatwa Secretary at the Egyptian Dar Al-Ifta explained that Islamic law does not set a fixed duration for engagement. There is no requirement for it to be either short or long; instead, the length is left to the couple to decide based on what suits their level of understanding and life circumstances.

She added that the duration of engagement can vary from one case to another. It may be longer if more time is needed for understanding and compatibility, or shorter if harmony and reassurance are achieved quickly. The real criterion is reaching a sufficient level of mutual understanding and readiness for marriage.

She also pointed out that engagement is not a binding contract in itself, and either party has the right to withdraw if incompatibility becomes clear. However, she warned against excessively prolonging the engagement period, as this may lead to psychological or social harm, especially if it continues for a long time without a clear decision.

Finally, she stressed the importance of moderation during this stage—so that it is neither too short to allow proper acquaintance nor too long to open the door to problems or uncontrolled emotional attachment—while taking into account family and social circumstances to ensure stability and peace of mind for both parties.
