Does the Lack of Blessing in Money Indicate God’s Anger? Al-Azhar Scholar Responds

Dr. Ahmed Abdel Azim, Secretary of Fatwas at Egypt’s Dar al-Iftaa, responded to a question that read:
"Why do I feel a lack of blessing in my money and constant debt? Does that mean God is angry with me, even though I pray and fast regularly?"

Dr. Abdel Azim explained that a lack of blessing in wealth is not necessarily an indication of divine anger, as there are various causes, both material and spiritual, that can lead to a decrease in sustenance.

He said: “Sins and wrongdoings can deprive a person of their sustenance. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: ‘A person may be deprived of provision because of a sin he commits.’”

He further explained that neglecting family ties can also be a reason for reduced provision, quoting the Prophet’s saying:
“Whoever wishes his provision to be increased and his life extended, let him uphold the ties of kinship.”

Dr. Abdel Azim also highlighted weak reliance on God as a hidden cause of lost blessings, stating:
“The Prophet said: If you truly relied on God as you should, He would provide for you as He provides for the birds — they leave hungry and return full.”

He concluded by advising Muslims to avoid sins, strengthen family bonds, and renew their trust in God, affirming that true blessing lies not in the amount of wealth but in the peace and sufficiency it brings.

"Blessing is not measured by how much you have, but by how much it fulfills your needs and fills your heart with contentment."
