Dar Al-Ifta Egypt has issued a clarification regarding the ruling on men who divorce their wives without any valid reason, stressing that such behavior is religiously discouraged or even forbidden, as it represents ingratitude for God’s blessings and harm to family stability.

The statement explained that marriage is built on affection and mercy, as Allah says: “And among His signs is that He created for you mates from among yourselves that you may find tranquility in them.” Divorce, therefore, should be a last resort — not a casual act.

Sheikh Ali Fakhr, Secretary of Fatwa at Dar Al-Ifta, noted that divorce without reason causes unnecessary harm to both spouses and destroys the harmony that Islam seeks to preserve within the family.

The fatwa further clarified that women who seek divorce without a valid reason are also sinful, citing the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: “Any woman who asks her husband for divorce without harm has forbidden herself the fragrance of Paradise.”

Dar Al-Ifta urged couples to resolve conflicts through dialogue and patience before considering separation, emphasizing that although divorce is permissible, it remains the most detested of all lawful acts in Islam.
