How Many Times Did the Prophet Perform Umrah? Scholars Explain the Number and Wisdom Behind It
Islamic scholars agreed that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ performed four Umrahs after the Hijrah — all during the month of Dhul-Qi’dah — highlighting the spiritual and symbolic wisdom behind choosing this sacred month.
Scholars unanimously state that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ performed four Umrahs after his migration to Madinah, all in the month of Dhul-Qi’dah except the one performed alongside his Hajj. As narrated by Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him): “The Messenger of Allah performed four Umrahs, all in Dhul-Qi’dah except the one with his Hajj.”
The first Umrah was at al-Hudaybiyyah in the 6th year of Hijrah, when the Prophet was prevented from entering Makkah by the Quraysh. He sacrificed his offering at al-Hudaybiyyah, shaved his head along with his companions, and returned to Madinah.
The second Umrah was the following year, known as the Umrah of Qada, during which he entered Makkah, performed the rituals, and stayed for three days.
The third Umrah was combined with his Farewell Hajj, and
the fourth Umrah took place at al-Ji’ranah after the Battle of Hunayn, when he distributed the spoils and performed Umrah before returning to Madinah.
Imam Ibn al-Qayyim confirmed that the Prophet’s Umrahs did not exceed four, while Imam al-Nawawi explained that the Prophet deliberately performed them in Dhul-Qi’dah to oppose the pre-Islamic belief that Umrah during this month was sinful — affirming its virtue and legitimacy.
Thus, the Prophet’s ﷺ Umrahs stand as a timeless example of devotion, wisdom, and a clear correction of false traditions through prophetic action and guidance.
