For centuries, Egyptians have held a deep spiritual connection with Imam Hussein ibn Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Cairo became a heartland for the love of Ahl al-Bayt, where devotion and reverence unite the faithful. Egyptians mark two major celebrations: his birth on the 3rd of Sha’ban and the commemoration of his head’s arrival to Egypt in the last week of Rabi’ al-Thani.

Imam Hussein was born in Medina on the 3rd of Sha’ban in the 4th year after Hijra. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ held him lovingly, called the adhan in his ear, and wept upon knowing his fate in Karbala. He was martyred on the 10th of Muharram, 61 AH — a day remembered as one of the most sorrowful in Islamic history.

Historians agree that Hussein’s body was buried in Karbala, while his head was carried from place to place until it reached Ascalon (Ashkelon) in Palestine. From there, it was transferred to Cairo during the Fatimid era.

Former Grand Mufti of Egypt, Dr. Ali Gomaa, affirmed that reliable historians — including Al-Maqrizi, Ibn Maysar, Al-Qalqashandi, and Ibn Iyas — recorded that Badr al-Jamali personally carried the sacred head from Ascalon to Egypt in 548 AH, placing it at Bab al-Dilam, the current site of Imam Hussein Mosque in Cairo.

Official Egyptian antiquities documents confirm this event, stating that Prince Tamim of Ascalon brought the head to Cairo on September 2, 1153 CE, where it was buried within the palace grounds. The shrine became one of the holiest and most visited spiritual landmarks in Egypt.

During the Ayyubid period, a minaret adorned with exquisite carvings was built above the shrine’s gate, preserving its legacy as both a spiritual and architectural treasure. Today, the Mosque of Imam Hussein remains a beacon of faith, visited by thousands seeking blessings and peace.
