In a clarification addressing a common question, the Dar al-Ifta explained that naming mosques after individuals is permissible in Islamic law. This may include the name of a founder, a scholar, a ruler, or a reformer, as long as the intention is honor or identification rather than pride or vanity.

The ruling is supported by the prophetic principle that “actions are judged by intentions,” emphasizing that sincerity determines permissibility. Therefore, if the naming serves a neutral or beneficial purpose, such as distinguishing one mosque from another, it is allowed.

However, the ruling warns against using such naming as a form of arrogance or self-glorification, as this contradicts the sanctity and spiritual purpose of mosques, which are dedicated solely to worship.

The statement also addressed construction issues, clarifying that once a building is fully designated as a mosque endowment for God, it cannot be altered or built upon in a way that changes its status. However, auxiliary structures that serve the mosque are allowed as long as they do not disturb worshippers or compromise its sanctity.

Scholarly opinions further confirm that endowed mosque property cannot be repurposed, as places of worship carry a sacred status that must remain protected and unchanged.
