Sheikh Mohamed Kamal, Fatwa Secretary at the Egyptian Dar Al-Ifta, answered a question about whether it is permissible to raise the eyes during prayer, and whether it is preferable to look at the sky or the place of prostration.

He explained on the program Fatawa Al-Nas that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ recommended looking at the place of prostration when standing before God. This practice is Sunnah according to the Hanafi school and recommended by the Shafi’i, and not observing it does not invalidate the prayer.

Sheikh Kamal emphasized that raising the eyes to the sky during prayer is discouraged, as it conflicts with the state of humility required in prayer. Looking downward during standing, bowing, and prostration fosters a sense of closeness to God, citing the hadith: “The closest a servant is to his Lord is while prostrating.”

He confirmed that while looking upward does not invalidate the prayer nor require prostration for forgetfulness (Sujud al-Sahw), following the Prophet’s guidance increases humility and reward.

Fatawa Al-Nas responds daily to viewers’ questions, including those with hearing impairments, and questions can be sent via the channel’s Facebook page or WhatsApp 01031581662. The show airs daily at 5 PM.
