The question of whether saying “Bismillah” before eating is obligatory often arises, especially among those seeking to follow proper Islamic practices.

According to Dar Al-Ifta Al-Misriyyah, saying “Bismillah” at the beginning of a meal is considered a recommended Sunnah, not an obligation. This means a person is rewarded for saying it, but not sinful if it is omitted.

If someone forgets to say it at the start, they can say “Bismillah at its beginning and end” upon remembering, which fulfills the practice and restores its spiritual benefit.

The simplest and most common form is just “Bismillah,” which is sufficient. Some scholars also allow the longer phrase “Bismillah Al-Rahman Al-Raheem,” though it is not required.

This practice carries deep spiritual meaning, reminding individuals to acknowledge and appreciate blessings before eating, and it is believed to bring barakah (blessing) into the meal.

In addition, Islamic teachings encourage proper etiquette while eating, such as using the right hand, eating from what is nearest, and avoiding behaviors that may disturb others.

It is also advised not to blow on food or make unpleasant sounds, while maintaining respect and mindfulness during meals.

These guidelines reflect a broader philosophy that combines discipline, gratitude, and social awareness in everyday actions.
