Is Singing and Music in Advertisements Halal or Haram? Dar Al-Ifta Settles the Debate
In response to a question addressed to it, Egypt’s Dar Al-Ifta clarified the Islamic ruling on the use of singing and music in visual and audio advertisements that promote food products, especially those that use musical instruments such as drums, xylophones, and tabl. The answer confirmed that allowing the use of music in advertisements is permissible, provided that it has a pleasant sound and does not distract from the remembrance of God or conflict with religious values.
The Egyptian Dar al-Ifta responded to a question regarding the use of music and singing in advertisements, particularly in promoting food products, including the use of instruments such as drums and cymbals. The response clarified that the use of music in such contexts is permissible as long as the music is pleasant and does not distract from the remembrance of God or promote sin.
The fatwa emphasized that the issue of listening to music is a matter of scholarly difference, and it is not an issue of foundational belief in Islam. Different scholars hold varying opinions on whether listening to music is permissible, and this disagreement has existed since the early days of Islamic jurisprudence.
Furthermore, the fatwa stated that singing accompanied by music is allowed as long as it does not incite immoral behavior or disobedience to God. The fatwa also highlighted that the commonly cited hadiths regarding the prohibition of music do not apply to all forms of music universally, as they were mentioned in specific contexts related to distractions from religious duties.
The fatwa further noted that some scholars, such as Imam al-Shawkani and Imam al-Ghazali, allowed the listening of music in certain cases, considering it a form of relaxation for the soul, as long as it does not interfere with worship or conflict with Islamic values. It emphasized that Muslims should be mindful of the negative effects of music and choose what aligns with their religious principles.
