Egypt’s Dar Al-Iftaa received a question regarding the ruling on dedicating Fridays for visiting graves and whether this day holds special virtue. In response, the institution affirmed that visiting graves is a recommended Sunnah that reminds Muslims of the afterlife and encourages mercy and prayer for the deceased.

According to the official statement, Islamic teachings encourage visiting graves on blessed days, especially on Friday, which is known for its mercy and acceptance of prayers.

Dar Al-Iftaa cited a narration from Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) in which the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

“Whoever visits the grave of his parents, or one of them, every Friday will be forgiven, and will be recorded as dutiful.”
(Reported by Al-Tabarani in Al-Mu’jam Al-Awsat).

It was also narrated that Fatimah, the daughter of the Prophet, used to visit the grave of her uncle Hamzah every Friday — highlighting that such visits were part of the righteous practice of early Muslims.

The Fatwa further quoted classical scholars such as Ibn Abidin Al-Hanafi, who stated that there is no harm in visiting graves at any time, but that Friday is among the most virtuous days for it, as many scholars believe the deceased recognize their visitors on Fridays and the days surrounding it.

In conclusion, Dar Al-Iftaa affirmed that visiting graves is a commendable act that strengthens the bond between the living and their departed loved ones. It serves as a reminder of life’s fragility and encourages good deeds — especially on Friday, the most blessed day of the week.
