Islamic Ruling Clarifies Whether Women Can Participate in Burial of Women
Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta explains the Islamic perspective on women taking part in burial procedures, including the original ruling and exceptional cases where it is permitted.
A fatwa official from Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta clarified that, in Islamic law, the responsibility of burying the deceased primarily lies with men, especially close male relatives, such as the husband if present. This is due to their knowledge of burial rulings and proper etiquette, including orienting the body toward the Qiblah and handling the burial process correctly.
She explained that historically, men have undertaken this responsibility because of the practical experience required to carry out burial procedures in accordance with Islamic guidelines.
She added that if no male relatives are available or able to perform the burial, it is permissible for another Muslim man with experience in burial practices to carry out the process properly.
In exceptional situations where no men are available, such as travel or being in a place without Muslim men, Muslim women are allowed to perform the burial of a woman, provided that all Islamic guidelines are observed.
She also noted that a woman may descend into the grave for farewell or supplication, as long as she does not directly perform the burial, while maintaining physical and emotional well-being and adhering to Islamic etiquette.
