Hossam El Badry Leads an Ambitious Project
Al Ahly Tripoli secured a place in the Confederation Cup Round of 32 after recording a huge 7-0 aggregate victory over Djibouti’s Karkoum across the two legs, opening the door to a more difficult stage of the continental campaign.
The Libyan side will face Ethiopian club Welwalo Adigrat in the Round of 32, with the first leg scheduled to take place in Ethiopia on one of October 16, 17, or 18, before Al Ahly Tripoli hosts the return match in Libya on one of October 23, 24, or 26.
The two matches carry exceptional importance because the Round of 32 represents the gateway to the group stage, making it essential for the Libyan side to produce its best performances to remain in contention for the continental title. 🏆
Al Ahly Tripoli qualified for the current edition of the competition after finishing third in the Libyan league last season, behind Zamalek and Pyramids, who are participating in the current edition of the African Champions League.
7 New Signings Strengthen the Squad
The Libyan club did not stop at securing continental qualification. Its management moved aggressively in the transfer market and completed seven new deals to strengthen several areas of the squad, aiming to build enough depth and experience for both domestic and African competitions.
The Egyptian league has played a noticeable role in the club’s recruitment strategy, with Al Ahly Tripoli signing Fiston Mayele, the former Pyramids striker, on a free transfer, giving the attacking line an important new option.
The club also signed South African forward Fakhri Lakay from Ceramica Cleopatra, along with Mostafa Shakshak after activating the purchase clause in his loan deal from ENPPI, continuing its efforts to assemble a squad combining experience with players capable of making a difference.
Arab and African Reinforcements
Al Ahly Tripoli also strengthened its squad with several players from outside the Egyptian league, signing Mohamed Khalil from Libyan club Al Akhdar and bringing in Jean-Claude, one of the notable players from Sudan’s Al Hilal.
In another deal, Omar El Hareik, a Libyan player who also holds Scottish nationality, joined from East Fife, who compete in the Scottish second division.
To add defensive strength and continental experience, Al Ahly Tripoli completed the signing of Hussein Al Dehiri from Algerian club USM Alger, the winners of the latest Confederation Cup edition. He was part of the team during its title-winning campaign for the second time in the club’s history after defeating Zamalek in the final.
A Squad Full of Experienced Names
The new signings will join a group of experienced players already at the club, led by former Pyramids midfielder Blati Toure and former Esperance star Hamdou El Houni.
Al Ahly Tripoli had also previously signed Ishaqou Yakubu from National Bank of Egypt in a deal reportedly valued at more than half a million dollars, while the squad also includes Mamadou Lamine Camara, who was among the players linked with a move to Egyptian giants Al Ahly during the current summer transfer window.
