⚖️ French Preliminary Investigation Focuses on Broadcasting Rights

Nasser Al-Khelaifi, president of Paris Saint-Germain and chairman of beIN Sports, is the subject of a preliminary investigation in France over allegations of a potential illegal conflict of interest linked to negotiations over Ligue 1 broadcasting rights.

According to comments from the Paris prosecutor’s office reported by Reuters, the investigation concerns negotiations held in 2024 over the broadcasting rights to Ligue 1 matches, with attention focused on Al-Khelaifi’s simultaneous roles at Paris Saint-Germain and beIN Sports.

Al-Khelaifi and beIN Sports have denied the allegations, maintaining that no wrongdoing took place.

📌 Al-Khelaifi Stepped Back From Some League Meetings

A source familiar with the case told Reuters that Nasser Al-Khelaifi stayed away from most meetings of the French professional league’s board during the previous year.

The source also said that he did not attend meetings dealing with matters connected to beIN Sports’ interests, amid scrutiny over how the broadcasting-rights negotiations were conducted.

The investigation is examining whether the combination of Al-Khelaifi’s different positions created a conflict of interest during discussions and decisions related to Ligue 1 broadcasting rights.

📝 beIN Sports Clarifies Al-Khelaifi’s Role

In a letter dated February and addressed to the French Football Federation’s ethics committee, beIN Sports said that despite Al-Khelaifi serving as chairman of the media group, he does not hold operational or executive responsibilities within the group or beIN Sports France.

The company stated that executive and operational responsibilities fall under the authority of group CEO Yousef Al-Obaidly.

The clarification comes as French authorities continue examining the circumstances surrounding the 2024 negotiations over Ligue 1 broadcasting rights.

🔎 What Does a Preliminary Investigation Mean?

The opening of a preliminary investigation is a step aimed at examining the facts and circumstances under review. It does not, by itself, establish that an offence was committed or mean that formal charges have been filed.

Attention will now turn to the findings of the French authorities as the investigation continues into the management of the broadcasting-rights negotiations and the potential overlap between the different roles involved.
