Maresca Defends Refereeing After Haaland Goal in Manchester Derby ⚽
Enzo Maresca, Manchester City’s head coach, refused to reduce his team’s victory over Manchester United to the refereeing controversy surrounding Erling Haaland’s goal, stressing that focusing on a single incident should not overshadow the performance produced by his team in one of the toughest matches of the season.
Manchester City defeated rivals Manchester United 1-0 in the Premier League derby despite being forced to play for more than an hour with 10 men after Phil Foden was sent off in the 23rd minute following his challenge on Bruno Fernandes.

Speaking at the press conference ahead of the Carabao Cup third-round clash against Norwich City, Maresca said: “To talk about one moment after that game, when we played for 70 or 75 minutes with 10 players, is not acceptable. I think the performance was amazing and I’m happy.”
He added: “It is known that there was a mistake and it happened. That’s all. Sometimes things go in your favor and sometimes they go against you.”

Erling Haaland scored the only goal of the match in the second half after the referee turned to VAR to review the Norwegian striker’s position and determine whether he was offside before the goal was eventually awarded to Manchester City.

Maresca also recalled a controversial refereeing incident from a previous Manchester derby, when Manchester City suffered a 2-1 defeat against Manchester United in January 2023.
In that match, Bruno Fernandes was awarded a goal despite Marcus Rashford being in an offside position during the attacking move, an incident that generated significant debate at the time.
Maresca was part of Manchester City’s coaching staff during that period and pointed out that the club has still not received an apology for the decision.
“Three years ago, when I was here, exactly the same thing happened against Manchester United. The goal was not a correct goal and nobody apologized, and we are still waiting for the apology,” he said.

“It is not easy for the VAR referees and the people sitting in front of the screens. Taking a decision within 10 or 20 seconds is difficult, and sometimes it is normal for mistakes to happen,” Maresca said.
Maresca’s comments underline his view that refereeing mistakes, despite their potential impact on matches, should not become the only factor used to assess a team’s performance, particularly after a game that featured exceptional circumstances such as playing with 10 men for a long period.
