Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe has revealed that he was once close to joining Liverpool before ultimately continuing his career in France and later moving to Real Madrid.
Mbappe explained that his mother was a major admirer of German coach Jurgen Klopp and believed Liverpool would have been the ideal destination for him at the time.
However, the French forward decided to remain in Paris because he wanted to continue playing in his hometown and did not want to leave France before becoming more mature.
Mbappe: My Mother Wanted Me to Join Liverpool
Mbappe said in an interview: “I was close to Liverpool, and my mother was a big fan of Jurgen Klopp. She thought Liverpool was the perfect destination for me and wanted me to move there.”
He added that he did not follow her preference because he wanted to continue playing in Paris.
“She always told me Liverpool would be there, that I would play at Anfield and that it would be amazing for me,” Mbappe explained.
Mbappe Visited Liverpool During Negotiations
The French star also revealed that he visited Liverpool during the early stage of the negotiations and toured the city and stadium.
“I went there in the first step of the negotiations. I visited the city and the stadium and met several people,” Mbappe said.
He recalled his mother’s reaction, explaining that she viewed Liverpool as a great, welcoming and family-oriented club.
Mbappe also revealed that he visited Anfield and developed a strong appreciation for the stadium atmosphere.
“I went to Anfield and fell in love with the stadium. I watched some matches on my own to feel the atmosphere because she wanted to imagine me playing there,” he said.
Mbappe Recalls His Relationship With Jurgen Klopp
Mbappe explained that the possibility of joining Liverpool was discussed frequently with his mother, who continued to encourage him to make the move.
He said he would ask her for her opinion, and she would repeatedly tell him that he should choose Liverpool.
The French forward also spoke highly of Klopp, describing him as an impressive coach and emphasizing the strong relationship and respect between them.
“Jurgen Klopp was an amazing coach. I met him and had a great relationship with him, and I had a lot of respect for him,” Mbappe said.
