The Portuguese Football Federation, headed by Pedro Proença, confirmed today, Thursday, the death of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva in a tragic car accident in northwestern Spain. The federation expressed its “deep sorrow over the loss of two players who were essential pillars of the national team.” Jota had played more than 50 international matches with the national squad, delivering remarkable performances known for their speed, skill, and fighting spirit.

In an official statement, Proença extended his heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the deceased, as well as to Liverpool FC and Portuguese club Penafiel, which Diogo and André represented respectively. He praised “their exceptional talent and high moral character, both on and off the pitch.”
The Portuguese Federation called on its European counterpart to hold a minute of silence before today’s UEFA Women’s Euro match between Portugal and Spain, “in honor of two heroes who can never be replaced in the history of Portuguese football.” The federation also confirmed it is working on “organizing a future ceremony to commemorate their legacy.”

In a related context, Egyptian sports broadcaster Ahmed Shobeir tweeted on his official account on X:
“A sad, shocking, and devastating piece of news… The death of Liverpool’s Diogo Jota and his brother in a horrific collision… May God protect us.”
Shobeir expressed his deep shock and sorrow over this tragic loss, praying that “God may have mercy on them, grant them a spacious entrance [to paradise], and give their families and loved ones patience and solace.”
