⚽🏆 Yakin Criticizes Refereeing After Switzerland’s World Cup Elimination
Switzerland head coach Murat Yakin believes his team dominated large parts of their 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-final match against Argentina, insisting that his side deserved a better outcome after being eliminated following the controversial sending-off of striker Breel Embolo.
Switzerland suffered a 3-1 defeat to Argentina after extra time, ending their historic World Cup campaign, but Yakin expressed his frustration with the decision that saw Embolo receive a second yellow card and leave the pitch.
The Swiss striker was shown a second yellow card for simulation in the 72nd minute after a VAR intervention under the tournament’s “player identification” rule. Embolo left the field in tears, only minutes after Switzerland had scored the equalizer and were putting Argentina under heavy pressure.
Argentina took advantage of their numerical superiority and scored twice in extra time to secure qualification for the semi-finals.
🎙️ Yakin: We Were Punished by an Unacceptable Law
Speaking after the match, Yakin praised his players’ performance and expressed his disappointment with the decision that affected the game.
“We imposed our style, controlled the match, and we were the team dominating the game. However, then came the red card,” Yakin said.
“We were punished because of a law that, from my point of view, is completely unacceptable. I cannot understand it. It is extremely painful to be eliminated from the tournament this way because I do not believe we deserved this ending today.”
💪 Praise for Switzerland Players
Despite the disappointment, Yakin highlighted the commitment and fighting spirit shown by his squad throughout the tournament.
“In my opinion, my players are the real heroes. They gave everything they had with heart and passion today,” he said.
“I am extremely proud of them, and they should also be proud of themselves.”
The Swiss coach emphasized that his players competed bravely against the defending world champions and showed they could compete at the highest level.
🔥 Yakin Questions VAR Decision
Yakin continued his criticism of the refereeing decision, arguing that similar situations in previous matches had often resulted only in a yellow card.
“But for the referee to make this decision and intervene in this way is completely incomprehensible,” he explained.
“This is a situation that has happened many times before, and usually a yellow card was enough. In my opinion, it was a harmless mistake, if there was even a mistake at all.”
🏆 “This Law Destroyed Our Match”
The Switzerland manager admitted that officials would likely defend the referee’s decision, but insisted that the rule had a major impact on the outcome of the match.
“I know they will defend the referee’s decision, but this law destroyed our match today,” Yakin said.
“Being eliminated in this way hurts incredibly. Unfortunately, we have to accept reality, but I can say that we are very proud of what we achieved during this tournament.”
“Now we are out, and that is the painful truth.”
🇨🇭 Switzerland’s Historic World Cup Run Ends
Switzerland’s 3-1 defeat against Argentina ended their first appearance in the World Cup quarter-finals since 1954.
The Swiss national team came close to making history, as they were just one victory away from reaching the semi-finals for the first time ever in their World Cup history.
Despite the elimination, Switzerland’s performance in the 2026 World Cup was considered one of the strongest campaigns in the nation’s football history. 🌍⚽
