Zamalek Surprises Everyone by Registering All Its Players in the Initial Squad List Pending Final Decisions
Zamalek registers all first-team players in the initial squad list to secure financial rights, excluding those whose contracts have ended or whose departures are confirmed.
The Zamalek Planning Committee, in full coordination with Sporting Director John Edward, has decided to register all first-team players in the initial squad list for the new season—excluding those whose contracts have already expired or whose departures have been confirmed due to the failure to reach renewal agreements.
This step aims to preserve the club’s financial rights and prevent players from leaving for free, especially amid the financial crisis currently facing Zamalek. The club seeks to maximize benefit from every asset it owns, particularly its players.
A source within the club revealed that Zamalek’s management believes that even players who are unlikely to be part of the team's plans for the new season should first be registered, after which a decision can be made—either to sell them outright or include them in a swap deal that secures technical or financial benefits for the club, such as reducing the cost of a potential transfer or acquiring a replacement in the same position.
The source added that the initial list will be officially submitted to the Egyptian Football Association within hours and will include all currently registered players, even those the club may intend to release later. The club will be able to remove any name from the list at a later stage by paying the required fees, which is seen as a logical step to ensure maximum benefit from the list and the registered names.
These moves come as part of a new strategy Zamalek is adopting in managing player contracts and squad planning—particularly after past experiences in which the club lost several key players without receiving any financial compensation.
