In a promising scientific development, experts have found that aloe vera contains compounds that may play a role in reducing the impact of Alzheimer’s disease, one of the most common neurological disorders among older adults.

Alzheimer’s is a progressive condition that affects memory and thinking abilities. As it advances, patients may experience language problems, slower responses, and sometimes hallucinations or behavioral changes, particularly in people over the age of 65.

Currently, there is no definitive cure for Alzheimer’s. Available medications mainly ease symptoms, such as cholinesterase inhibitors that support chemical communication between brain cells. However, these drugs often cause side effects like nausea, diarrhea, muscle cramps, and slow heart rate.

The new research suggests that aloe-based extracts could be better tolerated by the body, opening the door to future natural alternatives.

A Promising Natural Compound
Scientists identified beta-sitosterol, a plant compound structurally similar to cholesterol, found in aloe vera. It interacts strongly with two enzymes linked to memory loss.

Aloe vera is already known for its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and soothing properties. Analysis shows that beta-sitosterol is concentrated in the gel of aloe leaves and is commonly used in supplements for skin health, cholesterol reduction, and prostate support.

How Aloe Compounds Interact with the Brain
The study examined how aloe compounds interact with acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase, enzymes responsible for breaking down acetylcholine, a key chemical for communication between nerve cells.

Results indicate that beta-sitosterol shows strong binding stability with these enzymes, making it a strong candidate for future drug development. Beta-sitosterol and succinic acid also demonstrated favorable absorption profiles in the body.

Researchers stress that this work is still in its early stages, but it represents a hopeful step toward safer and more effective approaches to managing Alzheimer’s disease.
