US pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly announced that Chinese regulatory authorities have approved its drug Mirikizumab for the treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases, strengthening the company’s presence in China’s rapidly growing medical sector.
The approval covers moderate to severe active Crohn’s disease as well as ulcerative colitis, marking the first authorization for Eli Lilly’s China branch in the field of digestive immunology.
Mirikizumab is a modern targeted therapy already approved in several countries, including the United States. It works by blocking inflammatory pathways that damage the intestinal lining, helping reduce symptoms and improve patients’ quality of life.
The company has not yet disclosed the launch date or expected pricing in China, although it already markets treatments there for diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and obesity.
Market analysts expect China’s ulcerative colitis treatment market to grow significantly in the coming years, driven by increased adoption of targeted medicines, intensifying competition among global pharmaceutical firms.
