Dar Al-Ifta addresses claims about smoking during Ramadan for those who break their fast and explains the ruling on paying fasting compensation

Dar Al-Ifta Al-Misriyyah has issued clarification regarding the claim that smoking during Ramadan daytime is permissible if a person has already broken their fast. The institution stressed that deliberately breaking the fast without a valid excuse—such as illness or travel—is considered sinful and requires sincere repentance.

The statement emphasized that openly committing such acts during the holy month increases the severity of the wrongdoing, especially when done publicly without regard for the sanctity of Ramadan.

Paying Fidya for Missed Fasts

In a related ruling, the authority addressed questions about paying fidya (compensation) for missed fasting days in one lump sum. It confirmed that individuals who permanently cannot fast—such as the elderly or those with chronic illnesses—are allowed to pay the entire month’s fidya at once.

According to the Hanafi school of jurisprudence, the payment may be made at the beginning or end of Ramadan, provided it is not issued before the official start of the month. The fidya can also be given to one eligible recipient or distributed among several, as long as they qualify under Islamic guidelines.
