Enlarged Spleen: Early Warning Sign of Cancer Risk
New research reveals that an enlarged spleen, even if discovered by chance, could indicate a higher risk of blood cancers and liver diseases, especially in older adults.
The spleen, though small, plays a vital role in immunity, blood filtration, and fighting infections. Recent research highlights that an enlarged spleen may be linked to an increased risk of certain cancers, particularly blood cancers, as well as chronic liver conditions.
The study, involving thousands of participants in Denmark and the UK, found that a spleen length exceeding 135 mm or a volume of 400–500 ml is associated with significantly higher risks of blood cancers and liver diseases over follow-up years. For instance, men over 70 with an enlarged spleen may face up to a 46% risk of blood cancer, while women of the same age face about 27%.
Moreover, the results indicated a clear connection with liver fibrosis and liver cancer, with risks increasing as spleen size exceeds normal averages.
Researchers emphasize that while an enlarged spleen does not automatically indicate imminent disease, it serves as a warning sign warranting thorough medical evaluation, especially for older adults, to detect potential blood or cellular disorders early.
