1. Damage to the Anal Sphincter Muscles

The ability to control bowel movements depends on the integrity of the sphincter muscles surrounding the anal canal. When these muscles become weakened or damaged, retaining stool becomes more difficult.

Muscle damage may occur as a result of difficult vaginal delivery, especially when forceps are used or when an episiotomy is performed.

2. Nerve Damage

Injury to the nerves responsible for sensing stool in the rectum or controlling the anal sphincter muscles can lead to fecal incontinence.

Common causes of nerve damage include:

Vaginal childbirth.

Chronic straining during bowel movements.

Spinal cord injuries.
