A global study has shown that India faces the highest worldwide risk of chronic chikungunya, with millions expected to experience long-term joint pain and functional disability. Researchers stressed the need for urgent public health interventions to reduce infection and mitigate long-term effects.

The study, conducted by researchers at London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, used a high-resolution global mapping approach to estimate current and future chikungunya burden, considering climatic, environmental, social, and economic factors to predict infection rates and associated health impacts.

According to Times Now, chikungunya, transmitted by the Aedes mosquito, causes severe fever and joint pain. While many recover within weeks, a significant number suffer from chronic pain, arthritis, and long-term disability. The study estimates about 14.4 million annual cases in reported areas, with global cases potentially reaching 34.9 million.

India emerges as the country bearing the greatest long-term burden, due to its large population and favorable mosquito-breeding conditions. Spatial analysis across 103 countries, using a 5×5 km grid, identified high-risk areas in India characterized by high temperatures, rainfall, and presence of mosquito vectors, contributing to virus transmission
