Studies reveal that consuming too much salt may indirectly contribute to obesity by increasing fat storage and appetite

Nutrition experts warn that high salt intake can act as a hidden trigger for obesity by altering metabolism. Elevated sodium levels may increase fructose production in the liver, promoting insulin and leptin resistance, enhancing hunger, and encouraging fat storage.

Dr. Ravikiran Muthuswamy, an endocrinology consultant, explained that excess salt draws water into the body, causing temporary weight gain, but also affects liver enzymes that convert glucose to fructose, resulting in metabolic changes that promote fat accumulation over time.

These metabolic shifts disrupt leptin, the hormone that signals fullness, prompting increased food intake and gradually raising the risk of obesity.

While table salt itself does not directly cause obesity, excessive consumption—especially alongside processed foods and sugary drinks—often exceeds the recommended daily limit of 6 grams, contributing to weight gain.

Prevention Tips:

  • Reduce processed and packaged foods.

  • Check nutrition labels before purchasing products.

  • Limit sugary drinks and refined carbohydrates.

  • Maintain a balanced diet with at least five servings of fruits, vegetables, and nuts daily.

  • Engage in at least 30 minutes of physical activity each day to manage calories and reduce unhealthy fat.
