A recent report raised concern among bubble tea enthusiasts, revealing that tapioca pearls used in the drink may contain levels of toxic lead.

Bubble tea has become a popular beverage worldwide, especially among young people, due to its sweet taste and distinctive appearance. It typically consists of tea with milk or creamer, sweeteners, and tapioca pearls made from cassava, a plant known for absorbing heavy metals from soil, including lead.

Studies indicate that samples from popular products contained varying levels of lead, though below the safety threshold, and no dangerous levels of arsenic, mercury, or cadmium were detected.

Experts stated that the detected levels do not require an immediate ban, but they advised against daily consumption, as lead accumulates in the body over time and may affect the nervous system and heart. They emphasized that manufacturers should maintain strict quality checks.
