Recent environmental studies have found that millions of Americans are being exposed to dangerous chemicals known as **per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)** — often called “forever chemicals” — after detecting high concentrations in the **Great Lakes**, the largest source of freshwater in the United States.

According to the *Daily Mail*, three states — **Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota** — have issued new warnings against consuming local fish and wildlife after tests revealed alarming PFAS levels linked to **cancer, thyroid issues, and developmental problems**.

While no official drinking water warnings have been issued yet, Michigan authorities advised in May against touching surface foam that may contain PFAS. Wisconsin’s **Green Bay** area, spanning 1,600 square miles, has also been placed under advisory due to contamination.

In Minnesota, ten counties, including those bordering **Lake Superior**, were affected by the alerts. Meanwhile, Michigan reported that **98 inland lakes** out of 11,000 are now under PFAS warnings — three times more than last year.

Experts attribute the pollution to **industrial and landfill runoff** and wastewater discharges that flow into the lakes. The highest contamination levels were detected in **Lakes Ontario and Michigan**.

The Great Lakes provide drinking water to **nearly 40 million people** across the U.S. and Canada, raising major public health concerns.

PFAS are widely used in **paper manufacturing, non-stick cookware, water-resistant clothing, carpets, and food packaging**, and are known for their extreme persistence in the environment — taking thousands of years to degrade.

The **U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)** recently lowered the safe exposure limit from **70 parts per trillion to just 4**, following strong evidence linking PFAS to cancer, infertility, and immune system disorders.
