As academic pressure and daily stress continue to disrupt sleep schedules, a new American study offers reassuring news: sleeping longer on weekends can significantly protect teenagers’ mental health and reduce the risk of depression.

Researchers from the University of Oregon analyzed sleep patterns and mental health outcomes among adolescents and young adults aged 16 to 24.

The findings showed that participants who slept longer on weekends to compensate for weekday sleep loss had a 41% lower risk of depression compared to those who did not.

Expert Insight

Melinda Kussman, a psychiatry specialist at the University of Oregon, explained that sleep experts recommend 8–10 hours of sleep per night for teenagers, a target many struggle to reach during the school week.

She noted that the natural tendency for teens to stay up late makes weekend sleep recovery especially beneficial for mental well-being.
