Study Reveals: Happiness May Protect Against Chronic Diseases and Boost Heart Health
A new study has found that happiness and a sense of well-being can significantly reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer, suggesting that emotional wellness is a measurable key to better health.
In a groundbreaking discovery linking mental health to physical well-being, researchers revealed that happiness can lower the risk of chronic diseases, helping people live longer and healthier lives.
According to The Sun, chronic conditions like heart disease, cancer, asthma, and diabetes account for around three-quarters of global deaths and are influenced by genetics, lifestyle, and environmental factors. However, the new research adds another layer — the psychological impact of happiness on health.
Lead researcher Professor Iulia Iuga from Alba Iulia University in Romania explained that happiness is “not just a feeling but a measurable public health resource.” She described the life ladder scale from 0 to 10, where 0 represents the worst possible life and 10 the best, noting that people scoring lower are typically less happy and more prone to illness.
The findings indicate that individuals with higher happiness levels are less likely to develop chronic diseases. Experts also suggest that well-being can reduce blood pressure and cholesterol levels, both key risk factors for heart disease.
Researchers emphasize that small lifestyle choices — such as maintaining social connections, exercising, sleeping well, and practicing gratitude — can significantly improve happiness and, consequently, overall health.
