Nutrition experts have issued new warnings about artificial sweeteners used in sugar-free soft drinks, ice cream, and protein bars after scientific research linked them to a higher risk of stroke and heart disease.
A recent study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology showed that sugar-free energy drinks and sweetened products may cause worrying changes in brain cells within only a few hours after consumption.
Researchers found that the blood-brain barrier, which protects the brain from harmful substances while allowing nutrients to pass, can be altered about three hours after exposure to these sweeteners, weakening its protective role.
The analysis also recorded a reduction in proteins responsible for breaking down blood clots, a key factor in preventing strokes. This may increase the risk of blocked vessels or reduced oxygen and nutrient delivery to the brain.
Concern has grown due to an unexplained rise of nearly 15% in stroke cases among young people, pushing scientists to connect the trend with the growing intake of artificially sweetened drinks.
Although the study was small and conducted on cells outside the human body, it adds to increasing evidence that calls for caution, especially regarding erythritol, which has been associated with higher risks of heart disease and stroke among regular users.
Experts also warn that these sweeteners may disrupt the gut microbiome, contribute to weight gain, and negatively affect metabolism, in addition to their potential impact on blood vessels and brain health.
