Dr. Shubham Vatsya, a gastroenterology and liver specialist at Fortis Vasant Kunj Hospital in India, warned that excessive consumption of sweets can accelerate aging and cause wrinkles, explaining that too much sugar damages collagen and elastin, the key proteins responsible for keeping skin youthful and firm.

He noted that the negative effects of sugar go beyond weight gain and high blood sugar, extending to premature aging and loss of skin elasticity. Every extra bite of dessert, he said, silently attaches to skin proteins, making the skin dull and less supple over time.

Dr. Vatsya explained that excess sugar in the bloodstream binds to collagen and elastin through a process called glycation, forming harmful compounds known as Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs). These substances weaken blood vessels, accelerate internal organ aging, and increase the risk of diabetes, heart disease, and brain disorders.

He concluded by advising moderation during festive seasons, urging people to control sugar cravings and limit daily sweets consumption to preserve both health and youthful skin, noting that “your glow should come from good choices, not from extra sugar.”
