Questions frequently arise about whether prayers can be performed on behalf of someone who passed away without regularly performing them during their lifetime.

Sheikh عويضة عثمان clarified that obligatory prayers cannot be made up or performed on behalf of the deceased after death, as the obligation ends with life.

Ruling on making up prayers for the deceased

Scholars agree that prayer is a personal obligation that cannot be transferred after death, even if the person was negligent in performing it during their life.

Ongoing doors of goodness

However, doors of mercy remain open. The living may pray for the deceased, give charity in their name, recite the Qur’an and dedicate its reward, and perform Hajj or Umrah on their behalf if possible.

Voluntary acts and reward gifting

It is also permissible to dedicate the reward of voluntary acts such as fasting, remembrance of God, and night prayers, with hope that the reward reaches the deceased by God’s mercy.

Final conclusion

Supplication and charity remain among the greatest benefits for the deceased, while obligatory prayers cannot be performed on their behalf after death.
