Al-Azhar’s Global Center for Electronic Fatwa stressed that inappropriate joking and frivolity during the conclusion of a marriage contract are unacceptable because they can undermine the dignity of the contract and the serious responsibilities that follow it.

The center emphasized that celebrating marriage is permissible. However, the celebration should remain within what is lawful and appropriate and should not turn the marriage contract ceremony into a staged performance designed to attract views on social media.

Why Is Marriage Described as a Solemn Covenant?

Marriage is among the most significant contracts recognized in Islamic law. The Quran describes it as a solemn covenant, reflecting the responsibilities and consequences associated with establishing a family.

Allah says: “And how could you take it back after you have been intimate with one another and they have taken from you a solemn covenant?” [Quran 4:21].

Marriage establishes a family, protects lineage, provides a framework for raising children, and creates a relationship intended to be built upon tranquility, affection, mercy, responsibility, and stability.

Is Joking During the Marriage Contract Appropriate?

Al-Azhar emphasized that the marriage contract ceremony should be characterized by dignity, seriousness, and proper etiquette.

Turning the ceremony into a setting for ridicule or inserting inappropriate jokes and comments into the offer and acceptance can conflict with the nature of the contract, particularly because these words are directly connected to the legal conclusion of the marriage.

The Quran also warns against treating Allah’s signs with mockery, saying: “And do not take the signs of Allah in ridicule.” [Quran 2:231].

The Importance of Seriousness in Marriage Contracts

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “There are three matters which, whether spoken seriously or jokingly, are treated seriously: marriage, divorce, and taking back a wife.”

The meaning of this teaching highlights the importance of treating legally consequential statements with care rather than using them merely as entertainment.

Therefore, the parties involved in a marriage contract should use clear and appropriate language and avoid turning the offer and acceptance into a performance intended primarily to make people laugh.

Is Celebrating Marriage Permissible in Islam?

Yes. Islam does not prohibit happiness and celebration on the occasion of marriage.

The Prophetic tradition includes the public announcement of marriage and lawful expressions of joy. Such celebrations, however, should remain within permissible boundaries and avoid acts of disobedience, indecency, or inappropriate behavior.

Marriage marks the beginning of a new stage of life, making it more fitting for the occasion to be accompanied by gratitude, lawful happiness, and hope for blessing.

The Difference Between Celebrating Marriage and Mocking the Contract

There is an important distinction between expressing happiness at a wedding and turning the marriage contract itself into a comedic performance.

Lawful celebration can include permissible forms of joy that suit the occasion. By contrast, the situation becomes inappropriate when the contract ceremony is deliberately transformed into a staged spectacle designed to entertain an audience or generate social media views.

The dignity of the marriage contract should therefore remain separate from entertainment intended primarily to attract attention.

Al-Azhar’s Message to Couples Preparing for Marriage

Al-Azhar’s Global Center for Electronic Fatwa called on couples and their families to recognize the importance of the marriage covenant, observe the etiquette of the marriage contract, and express their happiness without excess or inappropriate behavior.

The marriage contract has its own dignity, and the ceremony deserves respect because it establishes a serious religious and social bond.

Allah says: “That is so. And whoever honors the symbols of Allah—indeed, it is from the piety of hearts.” [Quran 22:32].

Is celebrating marriage permissible in Islam?
Yes. Celebrating marriage is permissible as long as the celebration remains within lawful boundaries and avoids prohibited behavior.

Is joking during a marriage contract allowed?
The marriage contract should be conducted with seriousness and dignity. Inappropriate joking, especially during the offer and acceptance, should be avoided.

Why is marriage described as a solemn covenant?
Because marriage creates major rights and responsibilities and establishes a family relationship based on commitment, stability, affection, and mercy.

Can a marriage contract ceremony be turned into social media content?
A marriage contract should not be turned into a frivolous spectacle merely to attract views, particularly when doing so compromises its dignity or involves inappropriate behavior.

What are the main etiquettes of a marriage contract?
They include seriousness, dignity, respectful language, clarity in the offer and acceptance, and expressing happiness in a lawful and appropriate manner.
