Al-Azhar Scholar: Donkey Meat Not Forbidden in the Quran but Prohibited in the Sunnah
An Al-Azhar scholar explained that the prohibition of eating donkey meat was stated in the Prophet’s Sunnah, not explicitly in the Quran, noting that punishment for drinking alcohol is also defined by Sunnah, not scripture.
Dr. Mohamed Hammouda, a scholar from Al-Azhar, clarified that while the Quran does not explicitly forbid eating donkey meat, the Prophet’s Sunnah clearly prohibits it, establishing the ruling as religiously binding. He emphasized that rejecting the Sunnah is rejecting a vital part of Islam, as it completes and explains the Quranic message.
He further stated during a televised interview that several Islamic rulings were detailed through the Sunnah, not directly in the Quran — such as the disciplinary punishment for drinking alcohol, which is forty lashes, as mentioned in hadiths.
Meanwhile, the Islamic Research Academy highlighted that sincere repentance should be made while one is in good health to increase good deeds.
Sheikh Mohamed Wissam from Egypt’s Dar Al-Iftaa responded to a question about repeatedly committing sins after repentance, affirming that God never tires of forgiving as long as the believer continues to repent. “The one who repents from sin is like one who has no sin,” he said, urging Muslims to seek forgiveness, give charity, and send blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ.
