During winter, heavy rainfall can make it difficult for some Muslims to reach the mosque for congregational prayers. The Egyptian Dar al-Ifta provided a detailed explanation on the permissibility of praying at home, outlining the proper etiquette and conditions under which home prayer is valid.

Praying at Home During Rain is Permissible
Dar al-Ifta confirmed that praying at home is allowed if attending the mosque is difficult due to rain or unsafe roads. This ruling is based on the hadith of Abdullah ibn Umar (RA), where the Prophet ﷺ instructed praying in “ar-rihal” (homes) during cold or rainy nights. This means that a legitimate excuse allows one to pray at home without any reduction in reward.

Preference for Congregational Prayer at Home
If other family members, such as a spouse or children, are present, it is preferable to pray together at home. If that is not possible, an individual may pray alone and still receive full reward, as if praying in the mosque congregation, as long as the excuse is valid.

Returning to the Mosque After the Excuse Ends
Once the rain stops and conditions improve, Muslims should return to the mosque for congregational prayers. Attending the mosque maximizes blessings, multiplies reward, and preserves the recommended habit of praying in congregation.

Summary
Praying at home during rain or any valid excuse is permitted, with preference for congregation at home if possible, and one should resume mosque attendance once the obstacle is removed.
