Dar al-Ifta Clarifies Ruling on Praying Behind a Young Quran Memorizer
Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta stated that praying behind a young person who has memorized the entire Quran is valid, provided they recite correctly, and emphasized that age does not prevent one from leading prayer.
Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta received a question regarding the validity of praying behind a young Quran memorizer aged fifteen, who is the most proficient in recitation and understanding among the worshippers.
The authority clarified that the most knowledgeable and proficient reciter should lead the prayer, even if younger in age, citing the Prophet ﷺ: “Let the most learned of you lead, even if he is the youngest”. Accordingly, praying behind him is valid and commendable, and he may also lead Friday and Eid prayers to avoid disruption of religious obligations.
Dar al-Ifta highlighted the virtue of congregational prayer over individual prayer, citing the Prophet ﷺ: “Prayer in congregation surpasses prayer alone by twenty-seven degrees”, emphasizing that maintaining congregational prayer is a core principle of Islamic law that multiplies the reward.
The authority noted that scholars differ on whether congregational prayer is a confirmed Sunnah, a communal obligation, or individually obligatory for men, but the consensus is that proficiency in Quranic recitation grants the young leader precedence over older individuals when capacities are equal.
