Dar Al-Ifta Explains the Ruling on Marrying Without Parents' Consent

Egypt's Dar Al-Ifta has stated that a Muslim man may marry a woman of good character and strong religious commitment even if his parents object, provided he believes she will be a suitable wife and mother, while continuing to treat his parents with kindness and respect.

Dar Al-Ifta stressed that disagreement over marriage should never lead to disrespect or severing family ties. Instead, individuals should continue honoring their parents while trying to persuade them through patience, wisdom, and respectful dialogue.

The Fatwa also clarified that if a woman has no legal guardian, she may conclude her own marriage contract if she is an adult with full legal capacity, while observing Islamic legal requirements, including compatibility and an appropriate dowry.

If legal age requirements or exceptional circumstances apply, a qualified relative or an authorized official, such as a judge, may oversee the marriage in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
