Dar al-Ifta: The Prophet ﷺ Prayed and Sent Salutations Upon Himself in Tashahhud

Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta clarified that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ recited the same tashahhud formula Muslims use today, including prayers and salutations upon himself, as authentically transmitted through his companions.

Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta responded to a question from a follower on its official Facebook page asking: Did the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ pray and send salutations upon himself during tashahhud, as Muslims do today when saying “Peace be upon you, O Prophet” and “O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad”?

In its response, Dar al-Ifta stated that the Prophet ﷺ used the same tashahhud wording that Muslims recite today, and that he did not alter its phrases during prayer. This wording was directly taught by him to his companions and preserved in authentic hadith.

The Fatwa cited Imam Al-Nawawi in his book Al-Adhkar, who narrated that Al-Qasim reported from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught me this tashahhud:
‘All greetings, prayers, and pure words are for Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.’”

Imam Al-Nawawi described this as a beneficial insight, confirming that the Prophet’s tashahhud was identical to that of the Muslim community after him.

Dar al-Ifta further noted that several authentic narrations report similar wording, including the famous hadith of Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud, who said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught me the tashahhud as he taught me a surah from the Qur’an,” and he mentioned the same formula.

The Fatwa concluded that the Prophet ﷺ indeed prayed and sent salutations upon himself during tashahhud, and that this remains the established practice of the Muslim Ummah since the time of the Companions until today.
