Dr. Eman Mohamed, a member of Al-Azhar’s Global Fatwa Center, explained that doubt arising during an act of worship does not necessarily mean that something is wrong with a person’s worship.

She noted that such doubt may sometimes be connected to obsessive-compulsive patterns, while in other cases it may simply be an occasional uncertainty caused by distraction or a lack of concentration.

The appropriate response depends on the nature and frequency of the doubt. A passing uncertainty is not necessarily treated in the same way as persistent doubts that repeatedly disturb a person and lead them to repeat acts of worship.

Can Doubt During Worship Be OCD?

In some cases, repeated doubts can develop into a pattern in which a person repeatedly performs or repeats parts of an act of worship.

For example, a person may repeatedly perform ablution or prayer because they feel uncertain about whether they performed it correctly. Persistent doubts can create a cycle of repetition and anxiety.

When this happens, constantly responding to every doubt may reinforce the cycle rather than resolve it.

What Is the Difference Between Occasional Doubt and Obsessive Doubt?

Occasional doubt can happen because of tiredness, distraction or a temporary lack of concentration. It usually passes without dominating a person’s thoughts.

Obsessive doubt, by contrast, tends to be persistent and intrusive. It may lead a person to repeatedly redo an act of worship or repeatedly seek reassurance, only for the same doubt to return.

For this reason, not every passing doubt should become a source of constant anxiety.

How Should Muslims Deal With Doubt During Worship?

A person should distinguish between ordinary uncertainty and recurring obsessive doubts, while avoiding unnecessary repetition of worship.

Prayer, ablution and other acts of worship have specific rulings concerning doubt, and the appropriate ruling can depend on the type of doubt, when it occurs and whether it is recurring.

People experiencing persistent and disruptive religious doubts can seek guidance from qualified scholars. If obsessive thoughts significantly interfere with daily life, professional mental-health support may also be appropriate.

Does Doubt Mean That Worship Must Be Repeated?

Not every doubt requires an act of worship to be repeated. The ruling depends on the circumstances and the specific type of doubt.

A key consideration in cases of recurring obsessive doubts is not allowing persistent uncertainty to become a reason for endless repetition, while genuine cases of uncertainty can be addressed according to the relevant religious ruling.

Is every doubt during worship considered OCD?

No. Doubt can be occasional and caused by distraction, while obsessive doubt is typically repetitive, intrusive and disruptive.

Should repeated doubts about ablution lead to repeating ablution?

The ruling depends on the nature and frequency of the doubt. Repeated obsessive doubts should not automatically lead to repeatedly performing ablution.

Is there one ruling for all doubts during prayer?

No. The ruling can vary depending on the type of doubt, when it occurs and whether it is recurring.

How can I deal with obsessive doubts during worship?

Avoid reinforcing the cycle through unnecessary repetition, seek guidance from qualified religious scholars, and consider professional support when obsessive thoughts significantly affect daily life.
