In a detailed fatwa that sparked wide attention among Muslims, Sheikh Mohamed Kamal, Secretary of Fatwa at Egypt’s Dar Al-Ifta, explained the ruling on delaying the Fajr prayer, emphasizing that praying Fajr on time is one of the greatest signs of sincere faith and divine blessing.

He clarified that Allah has ordained specific times for prayers, as stated in the Qur’an: “Indeed, the prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times.” Therefore, anyone who performs Fajr before sunrise has prayed it correctly, but whoever deliberately delays it until after sunrise commits a sin, as they have taken the act of worship outside its lawful time.

The Sheikh added that those who miss Fajr unintentionally due to sleep have no sin, citing the Prophet’s saying: “There is no negligence in sleep; negligence is only while awake.” However, if a person deliberately delays or neglects the prayer, they must repent sincerely and make up the missed prayer immediately.

He explained that the time of Fajr extends from true dawn until sunrise, and performing it early carries the greatest virtue, as the Qur’an states: “Indeed, the recitation of Fajr is ever witnessed.”

To help believers maintain Fajr on time, Sheikh Kamal advised several practical steps:

Go to bed early to avoid exhaustion.

Recite bedtime supplications and Qur’an verses.

Keep the alarm clock away from the bed.

Make a sincere prayer: “O Allah, awaken me for Fajr and make it dearer to me than sleep.”

He concluded his fatwa saying that those who perform Fajr regularly are under Allah’s protection, quoting the Prophet ﷺ: “Whoever prays Fajr is under the protection of Allah until evening.” Maintaining Fajr, he added, fills one’s life with light, peace, and continuous blessing.
