How Can a Believer’s Heart Attach to the Prophet ﷺ? Dr. Yousry Gabr Explains
Dr. Yousry Gabr, an Al-Azhar scholar, said that a true attachment to the Prophet ﷺ begins with knowledge, as love cannot exist without understanding. He urged Muslims to learn about the Prophet’s life, manners, and character as the true path to love.
Dr. Yousry Gabr, a scholar of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, explained that a believer’s heart cannot truly attach to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ without genuine knowledge of him, for “the heart cannot love what it does not know.” He cited the Qur’anic verse: “Or do they not know their Messenger, and therefore they deny him?”
Speaking on “Know Your Prophet” broadcast on Al-Nas Channel, Dr. Gabr said that knowledge is the path to love, and therefore every Muslim should strive to learn about the Prophet’s lineage, appearance, noble manners, miracles, and teachings, for the more one knows him, the deeper the love grows.
He quoted Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: “Whoever saw him suddenly was awed by him, and whoever knew him closely loved him.” Dr. Gabr added that though the physical companionship of the Prophet ﷺ ended with his passing, spiritual closeness remains possible through imitating his character and keeping the company of those who love and revere him.
He highlighted that for centuries, Muslim scholars dedicated their lives to preserving every detail of the Prophet’s life, compiling his sayings, actions, and descriptions until the Sunnah became a living record of his blessed presence.
To deepen Prophetic love, Dr. Gabr advised frequent sending of peace and blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ, honoring his family and followers, thinking well of fellow Muslims, and praying for sinners’ guidance instead of judging them, for the Prophet ﷺ is a mercy to all and an intercessor for his entire Ummah.
He concluded:
“Whoever wishes his heart to be attached to the Prophet ﷺ must know him, follow his example, honor his Sunnah, and love his people — for that is the true path to his love and connection with his radiant spirit.”
