Dr. Mohamed El-Mahdy, psychiatry professor at Al-Azhar University, revealed that overthinking before sleep has become one of the most common psychological issues today, often caused by uncontrolled mental habits rather than a transient disorder.
He explained that many people, as soon as they lie down, start replaying daily events, reflecting on the past, and planning for the future, turning rest into continuous mental struggle and preventing sleep.
The first step to overcoming this issue is redefining the relationship between the bedroom and the mind, dedicating the space exclusively for sleep, away from eating, watching TV, or prolonged mental work. This helps the brain link the environment with relaxation and eases falling asleep.
Dr. El-Mahdy noted that some individuals suffer from “overthinking disorder,” a type of compulsive thought pattern where the mind cannot stop racing even at night, requiring professional psychological and behavioral therapy.
He suggested practical tips, including meditation, quiet reading, and writing down tasks to unload stressful thoughts, emphasizing that these routines help calm the mind and achieve regular sleep.
He concluded by comparing the mind to a sea that needs harbors for rest, stressing that sleep should be a moment of peace and calm, not a review session, ensuring mental health and restful nights.
