There is no doubt that understanding whether missing the Fajr prayer at its early time is a sign of Allah’s anger is among the most important concerns for Muslims who know the great virtue of Fajr prayer, and who are aware of the many Quranic verses and Prophetic traditions emphasizing its importance and obligation.

Fajr prayer is one of the greatest gates of provision, relief, and divine blessing. Whoever performs it is under Allah’s protection and care, and this blessed time is never missed by a mindful believer.

Ruling on Missing Fajr Prayer at Its Early Time

Sheikh Awida Othman, Secretary of Fatwa at Dar Al-Ifta Al-Misriyyah, explained that the five obligatory prayers must be performed by every adult sane Muslim, and by women when they are not in a state that prevents prayer such as menstruation or postpartum bleeding.

He clarified that every prayer has a fixed time, and it is obligatory to preserve it. If a person misses the prayer due to a valid excuse and wakes up after sunrise, he must repent, perform ablution, and pray Fajr as a make-up prayer (qada’).

He also stated that missing prayer time due to sleep does not carry sin, as the Prophet ﷺ said: “The pen is lifted from three…” including the sleeping person until he wakes up. Therefore, the sleeping person is not sinful for what he misses while asleep.

However, if a person turns missing Fajr into a regular habit, sleeping intentionally without taking means to wake up, then this becomes a serious negligence and warning sign.

Causes of Oversleeping Fajr Prayer

Among the main reasons for missing Fajr prayer:

  • Neglecting the great reward of Fajr, as it is a witnessed prayer attended by angels of night and day
  • Lack of awareness of the severe consequences of abandoning it
  • Spiritual negligence and weak faith motivation
  • Staying up late in unnecessary conversations, entertainment, or screens
  • Overeating at night, which causes heaviness and sleep
  • Failing to intend sincerely to wake up for prayer

The Prophet ﷺ warned against staying up after Isha without need, as it often leads to missing Fajr.

Ruling on Missing Fajr Due to Sleep

If a person oversleeps unintentionally, there is no sin upon him. The Prophet ﷺ said that the sleeping person is excused until he wakes up.

But if neglect becomes a lifestyle and Fajr is consistently missed without effort, then this is a major fault and cannot be justified as sleep alone.

Consequences of Deliberately Abandoning Fajr Prayer

  • Being described with the traits of hypocrisy
  • Warning of punishment mentioned in the Quran: “So they will meet Ghayy (destruction)”
  • Satan misguiding the negligent sleeper, as mentioned in hadith
  • Loss of spiritual light, peace, and inner stability
  • Exposure to distress, anxiety, and hardship

When Does Fajr Time End?

The time for Fajr begins at true dawn (Fajr al-Sadiq) and ends at sunrise.

This is based on the Prophet’s ﷺ saying: “The time of Fajr prayer lasts until the sun rises.” (Muslim)

Number of Rak‘ahs of Fajr Prayer

Fajr consists of two Sunnah rak‘ahs followed by two obligatory rak‘ahs.

The Sunnah of Fajr is highly emphasized, and the Prophet ﷺ never left it whether traveling or at home.
