Egypt’s Dar Al-Iftaa has issued an explanation regarding the proper position of a wife when she prays in congregation with her husband at home.

According to the fatwa, the Sunnah dictates that the wife should stand behind her husband in a separate row whenever possible, whether she prays alone with him or with other women. If she stands beside him, the prayer remains valid but is considered makruh (disliked), and it is preferable that she stands behind him to avoid scholarly disagreement.

The institution clarified that standing to the right of the imam applies only when the follower is a man or a boy, citing the authentic narration of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him):

“I prayed alongside the Prophet (peace be upon him), standing on his left. He took my head and moved me to his right.”

For women, Dar Al-Iftaa emphasized that the Sunnah is to stand behind the imam, even if she is the only one praying with him. This ruling is supported by the narration of Anas ibn Malik, in which the Prophet ﷺ prayed at the home of his grandmother Mulaykah, with Anas and an orphan standing behind him and the elderly woman standing further behind — establishing that women’s designated place in prayer is behind the men.

Scholars have agreed that a woman praying behind a man — even if she is alone — follows the correct order of congregational rows.

As for the ruling when a wife stands beside her husband during prayer, Dar Al-Iftaa noted that:

Maliki, Shafi‘i, and Hanbali scholars consider the prayer valid but disliked.

Hanafi scholars, however, consider the man’s prayer invalid if his wife stands directly beside him, as the proper order requires women to be behind men in rows.

Dar Al-Iftaa concluded by stressing that it is preferable and safer for the wife to stand behind her husband when praying together, following the practice of the Prophet ﷺ and preserving the proper order of congregational prayer.
