The miracle of Prophet Ibrahim, peace be upon him, being saved from the fire is one of the most remarkable stories of the prophets. After Ibrahim destroyed the idols of his people and established his argument against them, they decided to punish him by throwing him into a huge fire.

Yet Allah Almighty protected His prophet and turned the very fire prepared to destroy him into a source of safety.

Allah says: “They said, ‘Burn him and support your gods, if you are going to act.’” [Quran 21:68]

Their intention was to eliminate Ibrahim and defend their idol worship.

How Did They Prepare the Fire?

Gathering Firewood

Ibrahim’s people gathered large amounts of firewood and placed it in a large pit. They then set it ablaze until the flames became extremely intense.

The heat was so severe that they could not approach the fire closely enough to throw Ibrahim into it directly.

Using a Catapult

They therefore prepared a catapult to launch Ibrahim from a distance.

Ibrahim was placed in it while bound and was thrown into the center of the fire, relying completely upon Allah.

It is narrated from Ibn Abbas that Ibrahim said when he was thrown into the fire: “Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs.”

Ibrahim’s Miracle With the Fire

The Fire Became Cool and Peaceful

When Ibrahim was thrown into the fire, it did not burn or harm him. Instead, Allah commanded it to become cool and peaceful for him.

Allah says: “We said, ‘O fire, be coolness and peace upon Ibrahim.’” [Quran 21:69]

Thus, the enormous fire prepared to destroy him became a manifestation of Allah’s power and protection.

Why Did the Fire Not Burn Ibrahim?

The story demonstrates that fire does not independently possess the power to burn. Burning occurs by Allah’s will.

When Allah willed to protect Ibrahim, He commanded the fire to become cool and peaceful for him.

After the flames subsided and the smoke cleared, Ibrahim’s people found him safe and unharmed.

Although they had witnessed this extraordinary miracle, they continued in disbelief and stubbornness.

Allah says: “They intended to harm him, but We made them the greatest losers.” [Quran 21:70]

Allah also says: “They intended a plan against him, but We made them the lowest.” [Quran 37:98]
