Islamic preacher Mostafa Hosny addressed a question from a follower regarding the permissibility of using ChatGPT to understand meanings in the Quran. He explained that he only turns to the tool when he needs the meaning of a specific word while reading, particularly when he is unable to access traditional books of tafsir or scholarly references.

Hosny mentioned that while reading Surah Luqman, he came across the word “Khattār” and searched for its meaning using ChatGPT, requesting explanations based on trusted commentaries such as Ibn Ashur’s Al-Tahrir wa Al-Tanweer, Ibn Al-Jawzi’s Zad Al-Masir, and Ibn Kathir’s Tafsir Al-Quran Al-Azim. After comparing the result, he found the linguistic explanation to be accurate.

He clarified that he uses a paid version of the tool and does not know the accuracy of the free one but emphasized the importance of distinguishing between asking for a simple meaning and seeking religious rulings or detailed interpretations. Matters of jurisprudence and full tafsir, he said, should be referred to official bodies like Dar Al-Iftaa.

Hosny concluded by noting that ChatGPT can be useful for quick information but should not become a primary source of religious learning, as it lacks the precision required for issuing reliable interpretations.
