The Virtue of the First Ten Days of Dhul Hijjah

The first ten days of Dhul Hijjah are among the greatest days in the sight of Allah. Allah swore by them in the Qur’an, and they are days of immense worship, remembrance, fasting, charity, and Takbeer.

The Prophet ﷺ encouraged increasing remembrance of Allah during these days, especially Takbeer and Tahlil.

What Is Takbeer?

Takbeer means glorifying Allah by saying “Allahu Akbar” (Allah is the Greatest). It is one of the greatest forms of remembrance and is highly recommended during these blessed days.

Difference Between General and Restricted Takbeer

First: General Takbeer (Mutlaq)

This is Takbeer that is not tied to specific prayers or times. It can be said at any time:

  • Morning and evening
  • Before and after prayers
  • At home, in the street, and in markets

It begins from the first day of Dhul Hijjah and continues until the end of the days of Tashreeq (13th Dhul Hijjah).

Second: Restricted Takbeer (Muqayyad)

This is Takbeer said specifically after obligatory prayers.

It begins:

  • From Fajr of the Day of Arafah
  • Until Asr of the 13th of Dhul Hijjah

It is recited immediately after each obligatory prayer.

When Does Takbeer Begin in Dhul Hijjah?

Scholars differed into two opinions:

  • First opinion: From the first day of Dhul Hijjah until the end of Tashreeq days.
  • Second opinion: Restricted Takbeer begins from Fajr of Arafah until the end of Tashreeq days.

Takbeer for Pilgrims and Non-Pilgrims

  • Non-pilgrims: Begin Takbeer after Fajr of Arafah following prayers.
  • Pilgrims: Begin with Talbiyah during Ihram, then start Takbeer after stoning Jamrat al-Aqabah on the Day of Sacrifice.

Forms of Takbeer

There is no single fixed wording. Common forms include:

  • Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illa Allah…
  • Allahu Akbar Kabira
  • Allahu Akbar Kabira wal-Hamdu Lillah Kathira

Scholars agree the matter is flexible.

Virtue of Takbeer

Takbeer is among the greatest acts of worship in these days because it:

  • Glorifies Allah
  • Expresses devotion
  • Brings reward and blessings

The companions used to raise their voices with Takbeer in the markets during these blessed days.
