Multiply Your Rewards: Fasting in Sha’ban Before Ramadan
Sha’ban is a unique opportunity to boost your good deeds. Learn why fasting in this month elevates your rewards and prepares you for Ramadan.
Sha’ban is a blessed month preceding Ramadan, offering a chance to increase voluntary worship such as fasting, night prayers, and charity to spiritually prepare for Ramadan.
Aisha (RA) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ would fast in Sha’ban so much that we would say he never broke his fast, and he would break it so much that we would say he did not fast, yet he only completed full fasting in Ramadan. Fasting on Mondays and Thursdays is especially recommended, as deeds are raised to Allah on these days.
The Islamic Research Council emphasizes that fasting in Sha’ban acts like a “preparatory year” for Ramadan, activating the soul and strengthening devotion.
The pious predecessors highlighted its importance: Abu Bakr Al-Balkhi said, "Rajab is the month of sowing, Sha’ban is the month of watering, and Ramadan is the month of harvest," encouraging extra devotion and preparation.
Regarding the Prophet ﷺ’s wisdom in fasting Sha’ban, Usama bin Zaid said: "I did not see you fast in any month as much as in Sha’ban." The Prophet ﷺ replied: "This month is often neglected between Rajab and Ramadan; it is when deeds are raised to Allah, and I like that my deeds be raised while I am fasting."
