Dr. Ali Gomaa, a member of Al-Azhar’s Council of Senior Scholars, emphasized the importance of learning about Prophet Muhammad and his physical characteristics, virtues, manners, and noble qualities.

He explained that learning what the Companions transmitted about the Prophet’s appearance and character helps Muslims reflect on his greatness, deepen their love for him, and follow his example.

The Companions’ Status Through Meeting the Prophet

Dr. Ali Gomaa explained that a person is not considered a Companion merely because they lived during the Prophet’s era.

Rather, the person must have met and encountered Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him.

He noted that the Companions attained their distinguished status through the honor of seeing, meeting, and spending time with the Prophet, experiences that left a profound impact on their lives.

Seeing the Prophet in a Dream

Ali Gomaa also noted that seeing Prophet Muhammad in a dream is considered one of the great blessings a Muslim may receive.

He cited the Prophet’s statement: “Whoever sees me in a dream has truly seen me,” a hadith reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

Such a vision is connected to the believer’s love for the Prophet and attachment to his life and virtues.

The Prophet’s Beauty and Noble Characteristics

Ali Gomaa spoke about the Prophet’s beauty, explaining that his Companions were deeply impressed by his appearance and radiance.

He emphasized that the Prophet combined physical beauty with dignity, noble character, and perfection of manners.

Among the famous verses attributed to Hassan ibn Thabit in praise of the Prophet are:

“No eye has ever seen anyone more beautiful than you,
nor has any woman given birth to anyone more perfect than you.”

The Prophet’s Dignity and Presence

Ali Gomaa explained that the Prophet’s dignity and commanding presence were evident in the way his Companions interacted with him.

They would stand out of reverence and respect, despite the Prophet’s instruction discouraging them from doing so.

This reflected the profound love and respect they held for him.

Hassan ibn Thabit’s Love for the Prophet

Ali Gomaa also cited verses attributed to Hassan ibn Thabit expressing his deep love and reverence for Prophet Muhammad.

The verses reflect the exceptional position the Prophet held in the hearts of his Companions and the combination of love, admiration, and respect they felt toward him.

Hind ibn Abi Halah

Hind ibn Abi Halah was among the most prominent Companions to transmit a description of the Prophet.

Ali Gomaa explained that Hind was the Prophet’s stepson and the son of Lady Khadijah, may Allah be pleased with her.

He grew up in the Prophet’s household and was therefore particularly close to him, allowing him to remember details of his appearance and qualities.

Umm Ma'bad’s Description

Ali Gomaa also referred to the famous description given by Umm Ma'bad after she encountered the Prophet.

At the time, she had not yet embraced Islam, but she carefully observed his appearance when he passed by her and noticed the blessing associated with his presence.

She preserved her memory of his features and later provided a detailed description of what she had witnessed.

The Importance of Learning the Prophet’s Characteristics

Ali Gomaa emphasized that learning about Prophet Muhammad’s characteristics and virtues helps Muslims develop a deeper understanding of his appearance, manners, and noble qualities.
